YPPC Proposed Sound Fence
OWL Quiet Category Approved paddles and Master Athletics Q1 reduce db by 50% and are recommended to our members.
A new fence would need to be constructed or extend the height of the existing 4’ fence to a new fence up to 10’
This is because in order to block noise, you need to break the line of sight between the noise source and the noise receiver.
The noise barrier will be as close to the pickleball courts as possible for optimal results.
The fence will hold the weight of the noise barrier panels (45lbs each)
The sound barrier will be along the courts facing the neighbors
We are proposing to use Reinforced Mass Loaded Vinyl Noise Barrier Panels.
Based on historical applications of this type we anticipate receiving a 10-15db reduction at the property lines of the houses
A 10db reduction is a halving of sound levels, so it is significant.
York Paddle and Pickleball Club - Facts
· Pickleball is growing in popularity because it’s fun, easy to learn, is safe with our active aging citizens and young people, and is an activity that promotes health, well-being, needed social networks, and a strong benefit to our community.
· Players range from those playing for fun and health to more competitive players who are a point of pride for York and within the local pickleball community.
· YPPC has been in operation since 2007
· Our club is open from 8 am to 9 pm, and play starts an hour later on Sundays to be respectful of our neighbors
· We have 385 active members playing a combination of platform tennis and pickleball
· We’ve raised and contributed close to $30,000 for the York Hospital Living Well Center, contributed to local food drives, sponsored children in need during the holidays, and partnered with Northeast Passage to offer wheelchair pickleball to disabled community members looking to stay active in the outdoors.
Noise concerns:
We are awaiting approval from the York Town Planning Board to construct a noise mitigating fence to address concerns from the neighbors about the sound emanating from pickleball play. That meeting is currently scheduled for August 24, 2023 at 7pm. We are also looking for approval to improve our parking lot.
In addition, we have provided our membership a recommended list of approved paddles that are quieter than typical paddles.
We are working with noise-reducing fence manufacturers to design and construct a fence around the courts to address sound concerns. The sound barrier fence we propose would reduce the sound from our courts by 10-15 decibels. The new fence would have noise barrier panels and be 8-10 feet high, possibly in an “L” shape. We are prepared to have the fence professionally installed as soon as we are given approval from the town.
Background
To fully understand the sound impact of our club, we voluntarily took on the expense of extensive sound studies. We stand by the recent study conducted by Eric Reuter, a reputable, nationally known sound engineer with over 25 years of experience. Reuter is an Acoustical Society of America Fellow, the immediate past-president of the National Council of Acoustical Consultants and an Associate Professor of Acoustics at Berklee College of Music in Boston.
